In the ALCS, the Detroit Tigers disposed of the New York Yankees in a clean sweep to earn a spot in the World Series. Only a week removed from that triumph, the Tigers are facing a role reversal and being potentially swept by the San Francisco Giants in Game 4 of the World Series.

The Giants have rode their starting pitching to a 3-0 lead in the World Series thus far and will hand the ball to Matt Cain in hopes of sealing the sweep. Cain is coming off an NLCS Game 7 victory and is the Giants ace of the staff. The only reason he has had to wait until Game 4 to pitch is because the Giants required 7 games to top the Cardinals and the Tigers only needed 4 games to make the show.

Cain is facing a Detroit Tigers lineup that has been dazed and confused by Giants pitching. When the Tigers do manage to get a runner or two on base, they either hit into a double play or fail to extend the inning and put runs on the board. All three of the Giants runs this series came in Game 1 and only after they were already down by 0-6 and essentially out of the game. A meaningful run would inject some confidence into a rattled squad.

The law of averages suggest Triple Crown champ Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and the rest of the Tigers sluggers have to punch through this slump at some point. Unfortunately they will either have to do it against one of the best pitchers in either league or start booking tee times.

Fireballer Matt Scherzer take the mound for Detroit and absolutely must keep the Giants in check to give his team a chance to win. Scherzer struck out 10 Yankees in 5-and-two-thirds innings in Game 4 of the ALCS to clinch the series, and now must replicate that performance to keep his team alive.
