Star Trek Into Darkness Gets IMAX Preview In Front of The HobbitYour local IMAX cinema is the place to be next month, specifically to watch Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Doing so will grant you nine minutes of footage from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness in Digital IMAX 3D.

Paramount this evening announced the extended IMAX 3D preview of Star Trek Into Darkness that will play in front of The Hobbit beginning one month from today on December 14. The nine minutes will cover the beginning of the film, much like last winter's The Dark Knight Rises airplane hijack sequence played in front of Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams must have been impressed by the IMAX scenes filmed for The Dark Knight Rises by Christopher Nolan and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol by Bird as he chose to shoot several scenes in his second Trek film in the large-scale format.

Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment, calls the Star Trek Into Darkness footage "absolutely incredible," as if anyone needed any additional incentive to go out and see it. Expect descriptions of the Star Trek Into Darkness IMAX footage to hit the web before the December 14 debut.

Star Trek Into Darkness was written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. Details surrounding the plot have been kept tightly under wraps. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the Enterprise crew are returning, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the villain who may or may not be Khan, and Alice Eve and Peter Weller also joining the cast.

Paramount will release Star Trek Into Darkness in theaters, 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013. The IMAX 3D preview attached to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will appear in 500 digital IMAX theaters. Check your local theater beforehand to ensure it's playing.
