Box Office Predictions Game: Paranormal Activity 2 Scares Jackasses

It's baaaack. Our Box Office Prophet Game has returned after a two week hiatus in time to see Paramount dominate the upcoming weekend's box office business. The studio's Paranormal Activity 2 only needs to do a fraction of the original's business to be considered a success, while Jackass 3D has proven to be a locomotive without breaks or seatbelts after its first weekend.
To play this game you'll pick the box office totals for these two new films along with Clint Eastwood's latest Hereafter and holdovers Red and The Social Network from Friday, October 22 through Sunday, October 24.
Your predictions will be averaged in with the other players to go up against The Prophet predictions (visible below after your predictions are entered). Should the average player differences between the actual box office gross and predicted grosses beat the Prophet for 3 or more of the 5 films, the top player will win the following awesome collection of prizes:
- Date Night (Blu-ray)
- The Diplomat (Blu-ray)
- NCIS Los Angeles: The Complete First Season (DVD)
- Machine Gun McCain (Blu-ray)
- $5 A Day (Blu-ray)
- Wall Street: Insider Trading Edition (DVD)
- Modern Family: Season One (Blu-ray)
If the Prophet comes out on top then these prizes will roll into the next round and be joined by another. In that scenario the top player finisher will win a consolation DVD.
Once you are successfully logged in, the average player scores will update in real time below as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 9pm PST Thursday, October 21, with this round's results being published sometime Monday in our box office actuals report.

Paranormal Activity 2Can lightning strike twice? Paramount hopes so when it unleashes Paranormal Activity 2 onto roughly 2,900 screens this weekend. The original scared up a staggering $19.6 million off only 760 screens when it finally opened wide after a limited release. This one doesn't have the novelty but it does have a kid. HereafterMatt Damon acts under Clint Eastwood for the second year in a row in this supernatural-tinged drama. Their last coupling, Invictus, opened to a poor $8.6 million off 2,100 screens. Hereafter has more commercial appeal but won't stand a chance against Paranormal when opening on only 2,200 screens. All: $12.6 Me: n/a Prophet: $11.2 Actual: $12.0
Jackass 3DParamount is assured the top spot with either Jackass 3D or Paranormal 2. The former is coming off a huge $50.4 opening that took everyone by surprise in doubling all expectations. Its predecessors saw somewhere in the neighborhood of a 40-50% drop in their second weekend. All: $24.0 Me: n/a Prophet: $23.7 Actual: $21.3
RedRed didn't touch Jackass 3D last weekend but held its own with a nice $21.8 million opening behind Bruce Willis and pals. The Social NetworkThe Social Network refuses to go away after earning $10.3 million in its third weekend of release. A fourth trip will assuredly knock it into single-digits and straight out of our game, but don't expect a drop any bigger than 40% for the "Facebook movie."
