Box Office Predictions Game: Harry Potter Aims High

November 16, 2010

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will cast a magnificent spell on the box office this weekend and earn tens of million of dollars. There will be no stopping Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint on their way to a huge opening.

In this latest round of the Box Office Prophet game, you get to predict what Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 as well as Lionsgate's new thriller The Next Three Days and holdovers Megamind, Unstoppable and Due Date will all make in ticket sales between Friday, November 19 and Sunday, November 21. This period includes the Thursday midnight showings that Harry Potter will make several million off of.

In the last round of our game the Prophet predictions beat the average player predictions for four of the five eligible films so the prize was not won. We also came up 7 players shy of 50 so no new prize is added to the pot this week. I'll make it a little easier this time; equal or top 45 players this week and a new prize will be added next week. Regardless, top player moviebob scores the consolation prize for the second time in the past three rounds while Mad Max with Mel Gibson on Blu-ray remains up for grabs.

You can make your predictions for the five eligible films below once you are successfully logged in. The average player scores will update in real time as new predictions are entered. The entry period will close at 8pm PST Thursday, November 18. Good luck!

There are currently 49 players up against the Prophet

The entry period for November 19 - 21 has already ended. Follow the weekly results at the Weekend Box Office Prophet main page.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I
The beginning of the end for the Potter franchise has been a long time coming. Literally; the film's release was delayed and anticipation is at a fevered pitch. Half-Blood Prince enjoyed a $78 million back in the summer of 2009. Will it be topped by a November opening? Twilight proved this time of year can be very profitable. Hallows opens on over 4,000 screens.
All: $99.7   Me: n/a   Prophet: $124.3   Actual: $125.0
The Next Three Days
The only Muggle studio brave enough to face Potter this weekend is Lionsgate whom has either foolishly or wisely thrown The Next Three Days with Russell Crowe, Liam Neeson and Elizabeth Banks in front of the Hogwarts Express. The latest from Paul Haggis has a decent 2,500 screen count and might attract some business from Potter showing sellouts.
All: $14.1   Me: n/a   Prophet: $10.8   Actual: $6.6
Megamind
The biggest benefactor of Potter sellouts could be Megamind which held strong in its second weekend with a 36.7% drop. Potter won't be stealing Megamind's 3D screens due to Warner's late decision to scrap 3D plans. Ticket inflation from 3D screenings will still be in full effect.
All: $16.5   Me: n/a   Prophet: $17.1   Actual: $16.2
Unstoppable
Unstoppable will be facing direct competition from The Next Three Days but does come into its second weekend riding a train car full of positive word of mouth. The $22.7 million opening could be shaved by as much as half if The Next Three Days proves popular for older crowds not into boy wizards.
All: $12.4   Me: n/a   Prophet: $13.5   Actual: $13.0
Due Date
Due Date continues to hang around this fall, now entering its third weekend of release. Last week's earnings of $15.4 million was over a 50% move down from the previous weekend. Due Date is fading relatively fast and will have a really tough time hitting double digits barring some miraculous new marketing initiative by Warner Bros.
All: $7.9   Me: n/a   Prophet: $7.7   Actual: $8.9
