In an interview with the L.A. Times, Cameron opened up about a new environment on Pandora that Avatar 2 will explore as well as where a third film will likely head.
"Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora," Cameron said about the sequel. "And I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well."
Cameron is no stranger to shooting in and under water having directed The Abyss, Titanic, Aliens of the Deep and Ghosts of the Abyss. What he has not done is taken his new 3D technology employed on Avatar "under the sea."
Many Avatar fans had hoped Cameron would explore beyond the confines of Pandora for Avatar 2. Instead, Cameron suggests interplanetary action within the Centauri AB system where Pandora resides will have to wait until Avatar 3.
