Sandra Bullock Highest Paid Actress in 2014 at $51 Million

Sandra Bullock Highest Paid Actress

Gravity cannot hold Sandra Bullock’s earnings down as the star topped Forbes’ list of highest paid actresses in 2014 with a whopping $51 million earned over the past 12 months, from June 2013 through June 2014. Not too shabby for a 50-year old actress who generally likes to stay out of the limelight and let her work speak for itself.

Most of Bullock’s massive earnings can be contributed to the stellar success of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity co-starring George Clooney. The 2013 hit has amassed $716 million at the worldwide box office and also has been a hit on Blu-ray and DVD. Bullock did not win a Best Actress Academy Award for her work in the film, but Gravity did go on to win seven Oscars.

A distant second place went to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and X-Men: Days of Future Past star Jennifer Lawrence with $34 million. With Lawrence now reportedly collecting a portion of the back-end earnings for the next two Hunger Games installments, she should be one of the top paid actresses for the next couple years as well.

Despite Bullock and Lawrence earning big bucks, women in Hollywood are still earning considerably less than their male counterparts. Forbes estimates that the top-earning women earned $226 million over the past twelve months while the same sampling of top actors raked in a whopping $419 million.

The commercial success of films like Luc Besson’s Lucy starring Scarlett Johanson will encourage studios to gamble in actresses in leading roles where the top dollars are earned. Recent rumors suggest that Sony is working on a Ghostbusters reboot starring an all-female band of supernatural suppressors, while Sony is exploring a film set in the Spider-Man universe starring a female heroine.

Marvel, however, is a step behind the ball and has yet to give Scarlett Johansson her own Black Widow film to star in. Maybe they’re waiting for Sandra Bullock’s schedule to free up before tackling a female-centric superhero flick.
