The career of a film director is quite dependent upon the way in which they portray a story on the big screen. Due to the increased popularity of casino gambling, more and more of these films revolve around a casino theme.
Many of these casino films have led to some of the most memorable scenes given the link between casinos and high risk. These are three casino-themed films worth checking out if you haven’t already.
Poker players that make their rounds to various casinos to play in high stakes poker games are known as rounders. These players provided inspiration for this movie, specifically Mike McDermott.
Inspired by a true story and released in 1998, Matt Damon takes on the lead role in Rounders as he attempts to put poker behind him and seek a career in the legal arena. However, with mounting debts, McDermott sees poker as the best way in which to solve his financial woes and returns to the game.
Casinos have been included in many James Bond films but the best is probably 2006’s Casino Royale. Daniel Craig plays 007 in this Bond installment and does battles the evil Le Chifre but at the poker table and not in a shootout. At the climax of a high stakes poker game with more implications than a pot to win, Bond has the better hand, albeit a low one.
With a heist of three top Vegas casinos at the center of Ocean’s 11’s plot, it’s not surprising this 2001 remake of the 1960 classic would make this list.
Recently released from prison, Danny Ocean reassembles his crew to plot the most ambitious casino heist ever. The movie has an award-winning cast including Matt Damon, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia. One particularly interesting scene is when the group is trying to learn to play poker.
Given the success of this film genre, more casino films will be released in the future. Will one of these films make this list in the future?
