Default Star Trek 2

J.J. Abrams talked with MTV about the prospect of resurrecting Khan for the sequel.

"Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise."

"While I don’t want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we’ve seen in the past... nothing is off limits in terms of what we’re discussing," he said. "When Bob Orci and the others who know 'Trek' so well, the fun of working with them is they know this universe so deeply they’re the ones who are always considering what it means to deal with the stuff in the past, so it’ll be exciting."

There was once talk about Javier Bardem filling the role.

First, the bad news: We probably won't see a sequel until 2012. Sci Fi Wire got some major scoops about Star Trek 2 on the red carpet last night as members of the Trek cast and crew celebrated the release of their hit film on DVD and Blu-ray. While they’re still being a little sparse with secretive about any further details, some hints were dropped.

One of the most interesting was producer/writer Damon Lindelof’s revealing that the sequel may avoid a conventional, chronological time line in relation to the first film. Says Lindelof.
“One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something…Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we’re not going to tell you.”

The filmmakers are also looking to eschew convention when it comes to the tone of their sequel. Rather than going bigger and louder, Lindelof says they’re taking a different approach:

“When you buy your ticket and your popcorn and you go and sit and watch the second movie that we’re all working on together, we want to give the audience an experience that feels like it’s not a sequel in all the best ways.”

Questions were still asked of the series’ most popular antagonist, Khan Noonien Singh, played by Ricardo Montalban both in the character’s debut in the Star Trek episode “Space Seed” and more famously in the most popular Trek movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Here’s what Sci Fi Wire had to report:

“We’re not even at that stage yet, but the fun of where we are on the sequel is we could use some of what was done before in a new way,” Abrams said. “But we haven’t even figured out what we would use yet, so it’s very early on.” [Co-writer Roberto Orci] added that the creative team would vote on whether Khan works for their new story. “That’ll be kind of a groupthink decision,” Orci said.

I read that earlier today with their big "SPOILERS" in the title and came away thinking it said a lot of nothing. Lame attempt by Sci-fi Wire to get hits.

First off, 2012 for the sequel is fine by me. Studios are milking these franchises way too fast and 3 or 4 years in between is a much better approach to ensure quality. Secondly, after reading the Khan rumours does anyone else think they should avoid this at all costs? This new Star Trek was about re-invention, not about remaking one of the Trek movies. Wrath of Khan worked at the time because the tv series established the character and fanbase.

I think if, and that's a big if, Khan is in the story, it will be nothing at all like Wrath of Khan.

My gut says they go a new direction.

I think that would be best.
