It seems like Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro have been working on 'The Hobbit' prequels for a while now, but according to Jackson, they have yet to complete the script, begin casting or try to get the project greenlit.

"You never go offering a role to an actor until you have a script that they can read, and you also need a schedule so you can tell what dates you need them to work," he said.

Jackson added that the script is about three weeks away from being complete. "We have to deliver that to the studio," he said. "They have to read it. They have to like it. They have to agree to a budget. They have to green-light the movie, because we haven't really got a green-light. Everybody assumes that 'The Hobbit' is being made, but the reality is, unless we can write a script that the studio likes and present a budget that they like, there won't be any 'Hobbit' film being made."

John Rhys-Davies has no interest in The Hobbit.

I read that earlier today. Just as well. His voice is too recognizable.

According to Sci-Fi Wire, Ian McKellen has read the scripts that will eventually constitute the two halves of Guillermo del Toro's vision of The Hobbit.

"There are a lot of characters in The Hobbit, including, crucially, Bilbo, and they don't know who's going to play Bilbo. So it's extremely attractive that this part has been written for me. The other Gandalf was written for, well, just as Gandalf. There's lots for me to enjoy, in all sorts of ways. And I couldn't be happier. But I'm sworn to secrecy. I'm not to say anything at all about the script."

McKellen also talked about the differences (or lack of differences) between Jackson and del Toro.

"They are the same person. They were separated at birth. They're twins. They have the same attitude. Neither likes working in Hollywood. They're both fascinated by fantasy and violence on the screen, and gore, and things that frighten you. They like going into the psyche. They're both brilliant storytellers in very much the same way. And I think the script, because I have read it, plays very much to Guillermo's strengths, as I've seen them."

Viggo Mortensen told MovieWeb that Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro are looking for ways to incorporate many of the actors from the first trilogy into "The Hobbit," even some who's characters do not appear in the actual novel.

"My character is around at times -- in the middle," Mortensen told ComingSoon. "But it would only be if they made a second movie or connecting movie that connected 'The Hobbit' to 'The Lord of the Rings' that I might appear, which would be great."

I thought he quit the business after The Road.
