Star Wars: The Force Awakens Crossed $2 Billion at the Worldwide Box Office This Weekend

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Crossed $2 Billion

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still flying high at the box office and passed two substantial milestones this past weekend as it continues to add to its impressive ticket sales haul.

On Friday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned an estimated $1.76 million at the domestic box office in North America. While that number might not seem earth shattering at first glance, the deposit pushed the film’s domestic total to $900 million. No other film has ever reached $800 million, much less $900 million.

The big score came on Saturday when Star Wars: The Force Awakens became the third film in history to surpass $2 billion at the worldwide box office. The other two are James Cameron classics: Titanic and Avatar.

Despite the strong box office performance by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s unlikely that Titanic and Avatar will be threatened by its presence in the two billion-dollar club. The Force Awakens is projected to wrap up its box office run somewhere shy of $2.1 billion. Titanic’s total stands at $2.18 billion and Avatar is in another universe at over $2.7 billion thanks to immense global appeal that The Force Awakens was unable to replicate.

In The Force Awakens defense of chasing second place and coming up short, Titanic needed a re-release to pass $2 billion.

Next up for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD debut and potentially new home video records.
