It has been well over six months since Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug made its cinematic debut last December. Fans of the epic fantasy series knows that the inevitable extended edition is on the way, and Warner Home Video has formally announced The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition is coming to Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and Digital HD on a release date of November 4.
For his new cut of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Jackson has worked in an addition 25 minutes on top of what was already a robust run-time. The result is the second of three Hobbit films will run over three hours in duration at 186 minutes in its complete extended edition form.
As with the previous four middle-earth series extended edition Blu-ray sets, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will come with a selection of all-new bonus features. In total over nine hours worth of new extras inclusive to the Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray editions are offered as outlined below:
- Commentary with Peter Jackson, Director/Producer/Screenwriter and Philippa Boyens, Co-Producer/Screenwriter
- The Appendices – The Appendices Parts IX and X showcase an immersive multi-part history of the filming of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, covering pre-production in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, training, the work done on set and in the world of its digital effects.
- New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth – Part 2
The Blu-ray 3D version of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition spans five discs, includes the film on Blu-ray and Digital HD as well, and carries an SRP of $54.98. The three-disc Blu-ray version is $35.99 and also includes a Digital HD copy.
