Big Hero 6 Blu-ray Release Date in February, 3D Limited to Digital Only

on

Disney’s animated hit Big Hero 6 is coming to home video this February, but it won’t be available to watch in 3D on a disc-based format.

Digital HD and 3D versions of Big Hero 6 will be available to stream or purchase starting on February 3, 2015. The Blu-ray and DVD Big Hero 6 release date is a few weeks later on February 24, 2015. As with Frozen before it, Disney has opted not to release a Blu-ray 3D version of Big Hero 6, at least not in North America.

The Blu-ray edition of Big Hero 6 is a “collector’s edition” combo pack release that also includes the film on DVD and Digital HD. The feature presentation comes in 2.39:1 1080p video and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

Pre-order Big Hero 6 on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital combo for $22.99 at Amazon, over 40% off the list price.

Big Hero 6 bonus features are oddly split between all three formats — Blu-ray, DVD and Digital — with Blu-ray and Digital getting exclusives. Sadly there’s no one comprehensive release of Big Hero 6 on home video that offers all the bonus features.

  • FEAST Theatrical Short

Explore everything comic-book about Big Hero 6, from director Don Hall’s passion for comics to the story’s roots in a lesser known Marvel property. We’ll talk to Marvel’s Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb, who were consultants on the film, to learn what makes a good comic-book story, and how these devices were used to help create Disney’s “Big Hero 6.”
  • Big Animator 6: The Characters Behind the Characters – Join the six lead animators of Big Hero 6 as they talk about each of the characters and how they came to be the heroes they are now.

This is bad decision (again!) from Disney not releasing a 3D blu ray for us fans. Sad indeed. I will not buy unless in 3D. It makes a difference!

  • I completely agree with Monty. I recently built a new home with a nicely integrated sound system and TV (living room / theater room) with a lovely 3D 4K Sony TV. Since then we aren’t going to the movie theater, but we still want to see movies in 3D. To add to the matter, 3D over streaming is *horrible* (note: my experience is limited to Vudu). It looked like we were watching a less than 720P stream. My 4K TV is passive 3D, but uses a 4K image to produce the 3D image while maintaining a full 1080P experience; in other words *it’s gorgeous* with a 3D bluray. Please wake up Disney!!
